CRANBERRY GINGER SWEETHEART COOKIES

Just in time for Valentines Day or anytime your want to show your dog or puppy your love for them, that is of course after a great dog walk, dog hike or training session. These dog cookies are not only fun to make – but also make great gifts for the dog lover on Valentines’ Day. Wrap them up in some cellophane or parchment paper and tie with a nice pink or red bow and ‘ta-da’ you have a sweet gift to go. This recipe makes about 30 dog cookies (depending on your cookie cutter size) and half this of course if you double them up to make sandwiches. Usually, I prefer to leave them as singles as they keep longer, but this Valentines’ Day I am making a special batch for my own dogs and will spread the insides of the sandwiches with a bit of cream cheese mixed up with minced (unsweetened) cranberries. My dogs have been especially good and deserve something extra yummy!

  • Preheat oven to 350º
  • Prepare cookie sheet with a non-stick spray or parchment paper

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES (use organic whenever possible)

  • 1 cup flour (rice or wheat)
  • 1 cup oat bran
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh finely minced or grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 unsweetened/unflavoured yogurt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 large egg
  • If making sweetheart sandwiches you will need:
  • Light cream cheese
  • Finely minced unsweetened cranberries

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Toss all the dry ingredients into one bowl, mix and put aside (not cranberries)
  • Put all the other ingredients into a bowl and mix well
  • Add dry ingredients and mix up until you have a dough (not too much)
  • Once well blended into a ball, lightly flour your workspace and knead the ball of dough a few times. Roll out to no more than 1/4 inch in thickness and then cut into heart shapes. Be sure to press hard to have a clean cut!
  • Place onto prepared baking sheet
  • Baking time is approximate based on your oven and the size of your dog cookies but you can estimate about 12 to 15 minutes or just as soon as the dog cookies are looking all golden brown and yummy
  • For sweetheart sandwiches – just mix up a bit of cream cheese with your already minced cranberries and spread the underside of the dog cookie and match up with the underside of another dog cookie. Make sure they are completely cooled down though. Love will soon be in the air in your kitchen. xoxoxox

SUPER EASY ZUCCHINI PUPS

Does your dog or pup need a little extra fibre and moisture in her diet – without the calories? Do you need a wholesome and inexpensive treat for your dog after her walk? Experiencing itchy skin caused from corn or wheat treats. If so, the Zucchini Pups may be the perfect treat for you and your dog or pup.

Super easy, pick up a zucchini at your local market. Try to go small and just get one the first time, in the event your dog or pup does not love the zucchini. Sometimes, the texture is simply weird for them and they need some time to get used to it.

Always purchase organic whenever possible, wash well, you can leave the outer peel on or remove it. I like to make my treats with the skin on for a little extra fibre (it is also faster).

Cut the zucchini into little medallions and store in the fridge.

Great for treats, a fabulous natural pill pocket (without the nasty chemicals), or serve one or two on top of their breakfast or dinner.

Bowel movements may improve right away!

CAROB DIPPED CAT-SHAPED DOG COOKIES

Does the neighbour’s cat tease your dog? Does he (the cat) sit on the fence and hiss at your dog and run? If so, these cookies are to be appreciated and enjoyed by your cat-bullied dog. Have fun with them!

Preheat oven to 300º
Prepare cookie sheet parchment paper

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES (use organic whenever possible)

2 and 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
1 large egg
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup olive oil
1 beef bouillon (dissolved in hot water)
1/2 cup hot water
1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
1 tablespoon molasses
1 cup carob chips (may need a little extra!)

INSTRUCTIONS

Mix all ingredients together well. Knead dough until it is not sticky and is pliable. You may need to have some extra flour on hand. Roll to 1/4″ thickness, and cut into a fun shape for your dog using a cat-shaped cookie cutter. Place on a cookie or pizza sheet using parchment paper to prevent sticking. Next, melt carob chips in microwave or small saucepan. Even better, use a double-boiler if you have. Dip already cooled biscuits into melted carob or lay on a flat surface and brush or just drizzle carob over the biscuits with a pastry brush. Let cool and then call the dogs to eat a treat they will love.  Baking time is approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Meow!

TOTALLY TOASTY TURKEY TREATS

This quick and puppy pleasing treat is great for those dreaded holiday turkey leftovers.

  • Preheat oven to 350º
  • Prepare cookie sheet with a non-stick spray or parchment paper

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES (use organic whenever possible)

  • 2 cups diced cooked turkey
  • 2 cloves of crushed and minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped up parsley
  • 2 brown eggs
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (don’t bother to sift)
  • 2 tablespoons of brewer’s yeast
  • 2 tablespoons of olive or canola oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Beat the eggs in a bowl and set aside. In another bowl, combine the turkey, garlic, cheese, parsley, mix well and set aside. Next, add the egg mixture to the bowl containing the turkey mixture and combine. Then you can add in the flour, brewer’s yeast, and olive or canola oil. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Drop into small lumps onto your cookie sheet. In some cases – depending on your cookie sheet – you may be able to get away with an ungreased one. Make sure you keep these treats in your refrigerator until your puppy or dog has finished them off. Your Totally Toasty Turkey Treats will take about 20 to 25 minutes to bake but should look golden brown when ready.
